Even when I set a restore point manually SR fails to set
the restore point and also I cannot back or forward to
the last or next month.
The event viewer gives message...
System restore filter met unexpected error OXC0000056
while processing the file "shell32.dll new" on the volume
HarddiskVolume 1" It stopped monitoring it.

Can anyone help?! Thanks

Be sure System Restore is enabled:

Click Start/Settings/Control panel/System

Click the System Restore tab

Uncheck Turn off System Restore if it if checked.

Hi Geoff- After checking with development this is a known issue which will
be addressed in SP2. What happens is the filter which monitors and logs
file changes and the file system are both trying to access this file. The
file-system to mark it for deletion and delete, the filter driver to copy
before the delete operation. The filter driver will "let go" and error in
this type of condition so the file system wins out. We will have the file
filter increase the numbers of time it tries for the backup. The good news
is this "race' is a rare event, but you will have to disable then re-enable
system restore to "re-initialize". As you've seen the feature will purge
the existing restore points when the filter is 'unhooked' as change
integrity between current and past system via change monitoring is lost.
Thats why you can no longer see last months restore points. You cant go
foward
in the calendar until restore points are present.
For now the best thing is to disable then re-enable system restore and that
should reset you. You can do this from the Control Panel=>System
Applet=>System Restore tab.
thanks-
Bobbie Harder
