Are you running Windows XP?

I have no scanreg.ini on my XP machine.

Carol,

I would suggest that you run a CHKDSK on the drive to ensure that there are
no file system errors. Go to the MSDOS command prompt and enter the
following:

CHKDSK /R C:

This will require a reboot to perform. When Windows boots, please pay
attention to any messages that CHKDSK displays. After CHKDSK has finished
and Windows has rebooted, retry running the defragmenter.
