Can I dump this loser and install Win 98 or 2000? Isn't
there something about the file system that does not allow
us to get rid of XP?

XP is the most stable and secure Windows version yet released. What
problems are you having? Can we help?

There is nothing native to XP that prevents it's removal. However if your
system came with XP installed and the hardware is very proprietary you may
have to search around for appropriate drivers for your hardware to use that
hardware with another OS. If your system came with XP installed it may
negate parts of your warranty service to remove it.
Go here www.bootdisk.com and download a Windows 98 or Me floppy image and
create a floppy from it.
Boot with the floppy and at the command prompt type FDISK
Press Enter to accept the first screen
Select option to Delete Partitions
Select option to Delete Non-Dos Partitions
Delete partitions
Select option to Create Partitions
Chose option to Create Primary Partition
When finished press Esc and at the command prompt press CTRL+Alt+Del to
reboot
Reboot with the floppy and at the command prompt type FORMAT C: /U
Follow the above and XP is gone. If you want to install Windows 2000 simply
boot with the Windows 2000 CD and select the option to Install Windows as
per normal. Remove the partition, reformat as NTFS and Windows 2000 will be
installed.

What's the issue first off? Most likely its something that can be fixed.
You can always rid yourself of an OS with a format of the drive.

He is better off getting rid of XP because no matter what happens now he has
his mind made up about not liking the OS.

He probably got Windows XP "Home Edition" and finally
realized that he got ripped off for lack of features that
are availible in Windows 2000 and Windows XP
Professional!.

Well that's his fault for not looking into the differences. I did the same
thing. I got my computer with HE, and a few months later, I was running
Pro.
