When finished, fix your clock. You're one day ahead of the
rest of the world.

Been there done that :-)

Short run or direct connection into the USB ports. Device manager looks
fine and have reinstalled etc etc etc a number of times. Have also re
applied SP2.

Still no goo in normal mode, however when I boot to safe mode every thing
looks the same but now the files do not get corrupted when I move them about
via the USB ports.

It happens on ALL the ports front and rear so I am sure that it has to be a
driver some where and not just a faulty hub.

Date is now fixed.... Sorry issue with Time zones and a reinstall.

USB 2 (High Speed) is capable of only around 25+ Megabytes/Sec
transfer rate. You should ensure that your devices are not set to use
Write behind caching ( Policy for Speed ).

Check your System Event log for errors:
Click Start, Run ( type ) EventVwr.Msc [Enter]

Also, USB sub-systems depend on the Chipset driver package.
If not updated recently, would be worth installing.

I'd also add the System Environment Variable,
DevMgr_Show_NonPresent_Devices
& set it's value = 1
Then open Device Manager, Click View - tic/check "Show Hidden
Devices". Make sure you have no "Other" category and then remove
all Phantom entries ( Shown grayed Out ) in the following:
1.) USB
2.) Storage Volumes
3.) Disk Drives

Done.. No change... In safe mode it all work OK, but in normal mode the
errors on ant files being moved across the USB system is unusable.. Where

Check two parameters of the USB hardware:
1.) Controller - Advanced (TAB) Bandwidth Used
2.) HUB - Power (TAB) Check total mA used (500 mA Max)

Bandwith is 10% and 20% can not find Power tab ? The USB's are all
standard built into the MOB. This is not an external hub.

It all works in SAFE mode but not Normal mode, what else can I look for ?

Frustrated :-(

Since it works in safe mode and not normal mode, consider that there
may be a program running on your machine that somehow interferes with
the normal operation. Try running the "msconfig" application:
Start --> Run --> msconfig
Begin by going to the "startup" tab and disabling everything. Reboot
and if the USB is OK, then enable a few at a time (with a reboot
inbetween) until you find the problem application.

Good Luck,
John

Or maybe he noticed his error and corrected it.

have you reapplied your motherboard drivers (updated) ?

RJK
October 26th 06, 09:43 PM
I've casting an eye down through this thread, and a couple of things
occurred to me.

Any hardware additions or changes just prior to your problem ?
.....Pc type ? ...traditional type system box ? ...IDE / RAID ???
....80 core ribbons vs data corruption on 40 core when using ATA66mhz and
higher ?

....you mentioned "front and rear" USB ports, ...e.g. front ones connected to
a pin header on motherboard that could be shared with a USB socket at case
rear / near parallel port ?

If installed, have you tried removing motherboard chipset IDE Bus Master
drivers ? ...and using just the IDE drivers that XP finds in its' driver
database ?

regards, Richard

And if the chipset is based on a VIA version, you "may" need their USB filter
drivers.

Thanks... With all the re patching and updates including the BIOS, I guess
I did not notice, and then corrected as soon as I was made aware.

Not intentional and still have problems.

1: Giga-byte MOB K8NS Ultra 939
2: Updated drivers applied
3: msconfig run and disabled everything and re boot

STILL Corrupting

4: Re boot in safe mode with every thing disabled and it works!!!
5: So in safe mode regardless of services etc it works.

Fired up an old working VM (clean XP SP1) and same problem ???

Now I am confused....

It this a hardware problem ie. Faulty MOB ?

Mark,

Curious....what USB type is being used at home compared to work (i.e. USB
1.0, 1.1, 2.0) and what USB type periphial devices and cables are being
used?

At some stage my USB system has decided to work correctly BUT only in safe
mode.

I found by accedent that if I put large files onto any of my USB devices
when I got to work that they were full of crc errors etc or would not open
correctly. For that matter good files put on at work would end up with the
problem if i transfered them on to my HD via USB connections.

A quick test has been to move a known movie file around and I found that if
I run my home system in SAFE mode files being put or retrieved using USB
devices no longer get corrupted.

HELP, I can't find out what is causing the problem...

1.1 and 2.0 however it was all working and then my MOB failed and I got a
replacement under warranty :-) However it was not untill reciently when I
was trying to transfer some larger files that I saw the problem. I am
using flash drives / various types and have two external USB HD's where the
problem also appears.

I am starting to believe that it is a USB driver problem, as it is OK in
Safe mode ???

I used MS config to disable everything and it still failed yet when I went
to safe mode with every thing still disabled it works ?

As a further test I set up my Brother DCP 110C which happens to have a
card reader in it and I put in an XD card and guess what... I could
transfer the test file and it all works ? The only thing I noticed was that
it was much slower going to the Brother and the XD card 5-4 min for a
80meg file... I then transfered the file from the Brother to my flash disk
also takes 5-4 min and it arrived in good condition. I then tried
transfering the file from my HD to the flash disk 60sec and YEP a corrupted
file....

So is this a driver problem or Hardware ?

Or maybe a BIOS setting related to USB, or interrupts.. Changing the
mobo could have reset one of those.

Went into the Bios and changed it from the higest setting of V1.1 + V2.0
to just V1.1 now my system keeps telling me that I have a high speed
device that can perform faster if I plug it into a Hi-Speed USB 2 port.

BUT it works and I am no longer corrupting files, what ever the size...

Question remains... Is this a driver problem of a hardware problem ?

Is there a BIOS update from the vendor available? If so, it may address
the issue.
