View Full Version : Question mark not showing in text conversation box

This is going to sound like a really pathetic and silly question/problem and
it probably is? However, it's also a very annoying one as well as being
pretty mundane. Whenever I am using Windows Live Messeneger 8 and typing in
the text box, all of the keys on my keyboard work perfectly, with one
exception - the question mark (?) key! It works in every other program (Word,
Publisher, Outlook etc) but refuses to work in the Live Messenger 8 text box!
As I said, a rather petty problem I know but I would just like to know why
this might be happening and if there is anything I can do to aleviate this
problem? It was working fine until about 2 or 3 weeks ago and now nothing
happens with the ? key. I have not put any bad programs on my computer or
messed with anything, including the registry, that would possibly have made
this happen, as far as I am aware of anyway? Once again, apologise for such a
pathetic problem but it's just really a case of knowing why and how to stop
it? Many thanks in advance if anyone can assist. Regards, Mike, UK.

Greetings Mike,
That sounds odd. Is it possible that maybe you've added ? as an emoticon? You can check by
clicking the Tools menu (or press Alt-T if the menu is hidden), choose My Emoticons, scroll
down until you find the My Emoticons category see if it's there. If so, delete it.

Hi Jonathan
Your hunch was exactly correct! The ? was in with the emoticons where I must
have put it as one of those silly flashy things ages ago? However, although
the ? now works (I think, as I tested it on a blank message just to see if it
did work), I am not sure if it will when I actually speak to anyone using the
text box, as it would not permanently delete from the emoticons? Everytime I
hit remove, it did but as soon as I went back into Messenger and looked in
the emoticons, it was back again. But thanks again anyway as at least I now
know what the problem was. Bye for now. Mike

Hi Mike,
Don't feel so bad, you're not the first one to do that accidently. It's way too easy to add
these things without noticing.
Glad to be of assistance.

Thanks again anyway Jonathan. Now I have to go to the IE help and support
forum to find out why pictures wont show in my emails even though I tell
Outlook to allow them! Computers! Can't live without them cause they are
brilliant machines but when they go wrong, they can be the meanest things in
the world! My computer has very nearly flown out of the window on many an
occassion! LOL! Cheers again! Mike, Rochester, Kent, UK

This will sound even more pathetic but how do you add new emoticons to the
list that's available? I've found some that will exactly express my mood but
I can't figure out how to add them to the stock emoticon list.
