Disk cleaning won't work lately

The disk cleaning function in Windows XP control panel
stopped working in my 3 yr old, Dell desktop (400 MHZ
Pentium 2, 3 gigs available on the 12 gig HD). Defrag
works fine. Cleaning function was always slow (5-10
inutes just to analyze the HD). Now it shows 3 green
bars and just shuts down after about 15 minutes.
If i install a utility program to perform disk
cleaning, it defeats the purpose by taking up HD space.
Any clues how i can restore the Windows cleanup function?

Try the following web sites for troubleshooting suggestions:

Visit http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm and scroll
down to Line #48. In the right-hand window, click on
"Disk Cleanup - Compress Old Files Freezes"

Simply click on Kelly's fix, download the registry fix, then run it.
(Note: Disable your antivirus program before running the repair script)
