Everytime Windows Messenger runs, it takes up 100% of my CPU., and my
computer goes slow.
I'm using a Windows XP Proffesional computer, and an AOL Net Gear (W111T) DSL.

Greetings Josh,
This really isn't a solution but a workaround. Have you tried simply not using Windows
Messenger and using Windows Live Messenger instead (http://get.live.com/messenger/overview) ?
If that's not an option for you, then obviously this could be the result of a few things.
Try unplugging any external devices (a webcam for instance) and seeing if that makes any
difference. Additionally, try unplugging your network cable (or if you're using wireless,
disable the adapter temporarily) and see if that has any effect.

Howdy there,
I've got the same problem as Josh here, but I'm using Windows Live
Messenger (version 8.0)
Its insane at the moment. Within a few seconds the processor usage for
"msnmsgr.exe" rockets up to 100% and stays there. The system pretty
much locks up, the only way I can get it to work again is to painfully
open the task manager and change its priority to low. Even so my total
CPU usage is at a constant 100% and that can't be good for my
computer...
Any help would be great.

1/2 SOLUTION TO BUG:
I faced out the problem: how to reproduce it: invite multiple people a
time to a chat-room conversation (click Invite, and select more than
one person a time). If one of the nicknames is longer(or contains
strange characters - like Plus! character for colors) Live! messenger
crashes (frozen with 100%cpu usage). this appens also if when you are
in a chat-room with multiple people, someone with unicode chars in name
logs in,a dn you click on the balloon notifying the access (the balloon
that pops up near the systray).
it's a unicode buffer overflow bug... and I think is a security hole
too! can be used to execute code...
