I was working on a friends laptop installing Windows updates while I was also
installing a new printer. I incorrectly chose to restart the computer in the
middle of the updates. Now the Safe Mode options will not work allow me back
into Windows. When I choose Safe Mode, or any of the the other options from
the menu, the system loops back into Safe Mode options. I hit F8 and tried
the other various boot up options - also without success. Please help, I
think I may have corrupted something and cannot get into Windows to uninstall
the printer driver.

Thank you,
Tanya Glass

Have you tried the 'Last Known Good Configuration' feature from the
bottom of the Safe Mode menu? If so, can you boot to your Windows XP CD?
If that works, look at the following site:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/win_xp_rec.htm - under the heading: To
start the computer and use the Recovery Console. Also, look down the
page for commands that can be accessed from the console.

Also, directly from Micro$oft:

To start the computer and use the Recovery Console

1. Insert the WinXP CD and restart the computer. If prompted, select any
options required to boot from the CD.

2. When the text-based part of Setup begins, follow the prompts; choose
the repair or recover option by pressing R.

3. If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot system, choose the
installation that you need to access from the Recovery Console.

4. When prompted, type the Administrator password.

5. At the system prompt, type Recovery Console commands; type help for a
list of commands, or help commandname for help on a specific command.

6. To exit the Recovery Console and restart the computer, type exit.

When you're in recovery console, type chkdsk /r and let it run. This
will fix any errors that may have occurred when you accidentally
restarted the computer. Good luck and get back here with results.
