My computer has been slow

My computer has been real slow the past few days, what could cause
this?

The only thing different I did was free space up

Have you checked for viruses or other pests?

Too many programs running at start-up.

A virus.

A heavily fragmented hard drive.

Spyware/Adware/Worms/Parasites/Malware/Trojans/Rootkits etc.

An old, slow computer.

Heat - a hot CPU runs slower.

Hardware problems, such as hard drive read errors.

I only have 3 programs running at start up
Alot of anti malware programs (not a lot but Ad adware SE, spybot and
AVG)

I just got this computer July 2004

What can I do about the hardware problems?
