I's like to update my Java - but want to uninstall the old versions
first. When I try to uninstall Java 2 RE SE v1.4.2_05, I get a
message which reads 'Error applying transforms. Verify that the
specified transform paths are valid.' Have no idea what this means.

See here:
http://java.com/en/download/help/error_applying_transforms.xml

Manually uninstall that version of Java, using the Windows Installer CleanUp
Utility:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=290301

Then install the latest Sun Java.
