it doesn't matter what i tried, it won't go away. the funny thing is that it
is not there when windows is starting up, or when the monitor is on standby,
and the screen saver that is moving around. help, because i'm wondering if
i'm going to have dell replace the dell 23", flat panel monitor. what to do?

I don't know what the problem is, but if doesn't appear on all screens, it's
obviously not the monitor itself, and there's no point to replacing it.

If that line does not appear when Windows is starting up, then it can be the
display driver. Boot in Safe Mode and see if it appears again.

You are saying that it does not appear when booting up?
I believe you got problem with your driver. but once, I experienced a pink
vertical line on my monitor that was not permanent (no line on booting my
computer up, and after 3-4 days, it became permanent, whenever the monitor is
on. It was replaced for a cost.
