How do I get rid of the link to my inbox my messenger created in my logon
screen?

Greetings,
I assume you mean on the welcome screen of Windows? If so, even if you manually reset the
value in the registry, Messenger will just readd it every time you sign in.
However, what you can do is completely turn off this feature. To do so, download the TweakUI
powertoy:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp (see on the right).
After you have TweakUI installed, click Start, All Programs, Powertoys for Windows XP, and
choose TweakUI for Windows XP. In the TweakUI window, on the left, click the '+' next to
Logon, and choose Unread Mail. Uncheck 'Show unread mail on Welcome screen' and click OK.
