fix missing files and error messages

In the later versions of Windows, Scandick was available
to fix problems. On XP there is no scandisk. How do I
fix problems without system restore. Everytime I restore
I have more error messages when I reboot. Now I am having
problems installing new software because a registry file
is missing.
