Media Center doesn't recognize CD player or DVD burner

Have had Windows Media Center installed with all updates for a while.
Suddenly, I see !!!!! next to the CD player (Sony CRX230E player) and
Memorex DVD +/- dual layer burner X1. I call Memorex and Sony. Not
their problem - they are plug and play - no drivers needed - call
Microsoft, they tell me. I call MS and they want $35 to fix.

I checked the connections inside PC and all is fine.

What do I do to fix?

I had a similar problem when upgrading/installing Windows XP. See if
this knowledge base article from Microsoft helps you out at all. Let
me know.
