View Full Version : Having trouble formatting 3rd hard drive

I have a Seagate Barracuda(PATA) 300gb hard drive attached to a PCI
controller card. Windows recognize it in the BIOS and in My computer. I
first went to format it through Disk management but it failed giving me the
error "Logical Disk Manager: The format did not complete successfully".
Ok - so I tried a second time and did the same thing. I believe it got up
to 94%. Next, I tried Partition Magic 8 and got the error in the attached
pic. Finally I tried using the Seagate disc but it didn't bulge at all and
gave me a not responding when I hit cancelled.

The drive is set to cable select. My system is WinXP MCE w/SP2 with all
updates. I can provide additional info if needed.

Anyone know what could be the problem?

Thanks,
Newtechie

You might look on your pci card site and check whether there are any
driver/firmware updates.
You might even try the seagate tools checking utility
If you managed to create a partition in Disk Management you might in any
case be advised to first delete this partition.

Hi DL - yes I have the latest drivers and BIOS for the card. I tried the
Seagate program and it just sits there when I try to format and partition.
I have no problem deleting the partition I created within Windows. It's a
brand new drive so I don't see what the problem could be.

I mean the Seagate Disk checking utility, not the setup utility.
Even brand new drives can be DOA

You might also try the Quick Format option, sometimes this works on large
drive when Full format fails (typically near the completion of the
formatting).

Try setting the drive to to master-single, or master w/ slave, whichever is
applicable. If that doesn't help, and you're currently trying to configure
the disk as one big 300GB partition, then try creating a slightly smaller
partition. There's a possibilty that the partition is spanning past the end of
the disk.

Hi Bill,

I've run into another problem now. I changed to drive to master like you
suggested. When I boot up, it just stays at the WinXP screen with the
progress bar and doesn't go any further. If I remove the power from the
300g drive, then all is fine and I can boot normally. I didn't have this
problem last night. What could have gone wrong now? Please help.

Thanks,
newtechie

Disregard last post. All is ok now. I did something different. I just
took out drive 2, put in the 300gb and formatted it as NTFS using the
Seagate software. Then switched the drives again. I also think I had the
jumpers on the 300gb set wrong and maybe that was causing it not to boot
correctly. All is well, I can sleep now :-) LOL

Thanks everyone for your help.
