A power failure occured as I was starting up my computer. After the power
returned, I tried to start my computer but I got the "Sorry for inconvience,
please choose mode to start computer in." I tried every configuration but it
will not move any further then the black screen with the windows XP logo and
the 3 green blocks on the bottom going past. It's a 3 yr old computer and I
have lost all the recovery CD that came with it. My last option is to run
system recovery or to just shoot the darn thing and put it out of it's
misery!

Are there any other suggestions before I send this thing to the computer
grave site?

On a couple of occasions, I've had good results in this kind of situation
after simply deleting the pagefile.sys file in the root directory. You may
be able to get at this via the Recovery Console, which you may be able to
get to via the startup options or via any XP boot CD. Your recovery CD
probably won't help.

Alternately, you can remove the drive, attach it to another XP system, and
delete that file. Then, put it back in and restart the system. Note that
when you move the drive to the other system, you may need to change drive
jumper settings.

Unfortunately I have no CD's for this computer and not very computer savvy.
I went ahead and did the system recovery and it fixed the start up program. I
did lose a lot of files but thankfully I was smart enough to make back ups of
everything last month. In the future it would probably be a good thing for me
to put the disks that come with new computers up someplace where I can't lose
them, LOL. Thank you for your help. I will remember it and keep this page
saved for future reference :)
