When I try to use the Win+E hotkey to open Explorer, I only get an error
message, teling me that the action isn't permitted on the computer. What can
be the problem?
Do you know anywhere in the registry, that can trigger this? My other
Win+something hotkeys work fine.

XP Home SP2

Enable/Disable the Windows Logo Keys
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_logokeys.htm

Also a Group Policy...

Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Explorer
Turn off Windows+X hotkeys
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Pol icies\Network
NoWinKeys

Thank you for your reply.
I'll just repeat the two last sentences of my first post:)

"My other Win+something hotkeys work fine."
- the policy you referenced is for all the Win+something shortcuts. I'm
looking for the specific place where my Win+E could have been disabled.

"XP Home SP2"
- no group policy editing in home edition:(

but thank you for your try:)

Pressing Windows logo key+E displays the following message:

This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this
computer. Please contact your system administrator.

All other Windows logo key combinations will continue to work. By default,
the Windows logo key combinations include:
Windows logo key (alone): Opens the Start menu
Windows logo key+E: Starts Windows Explorer
Windows logo key+R: Opens the Run dialog box
Windows logo key+F: Opens the Search menu
Windows logo key+U: Starts Utility Manager
Windows logo key+F1: Starts Windows Help
Windows logo key+F3: Opens the Search menu.

How to Disable the "Windows Logo Key+E" Key Combination with Group Policies
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/301422

Disable programs on Settings menu

This policy is located under the following branch:
User Configuration\AdministrativeTemplates\Start Menu and Taskbar

Also these registry keys...
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Pol icies\Explorer
and/or
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Pol icies\Explorer
Value Name: NoSetFolders
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data: 0 or 1
0 (or not in the registry) = The policy is disabled or not configured.
Control Panel, Printers, and Network and Dial-up Connections can run.
1 = The policy is enabled. Control Panel, Printers, and Network and Dial-up
Connections cannot run.

Thanks. This was it.

Why can you find it in no time, when I've spent weeks of searching:)

Glad to hear it!

Keep in mind that it took me two tries. ;-) I do a lot of searching. I
should have been a librarian. :-D
