DVD Audio is Choppy

I have a new computer bought this summer. It has 512 MB of RAM and it
performs well, except in one area. When I play a DVD or CD using the DVD-ROM
drive, my audio playback is choppy. However, if I copy the CD, or if I
download a movie, and play it directly from the computer, my audio is just
fine. I really want to watch my DVDs but since the audio is choppy, I
usually don't. How do I fix this problem? What can I do? Thank you so much!

Usually its about four or five. I've troubleshooted by ending as many
programs as I could, but I still get the same results.

The exact same thing is happening to me too!!! I have a Gateway Notebook.
The video plays fine... but the sound kind of lags behind it's wierd. It
does it whether or not I have other programs running... it is very annoying.
If I download a video it's fine... but if I try to play a video or burn a cd,
it doesnt work properly.

Yeah, exactly! The sounds sorta skips and it totally ruins whatever I'm
trying to watch. We are totally experiencing the same problem. I hope
someone can find a solution, cause you're right, its very annoying.

Having read the thread, I understand that both you and Tenille
are experiencing the same problem?
Neither of you can play a/v from your optical drive, but both of
you can play a/v from your HDD, is that correct?

As a confirmation, rip the undamaged, commercially pressed DVD
you're having problems with to the HDD and play from there. If
the very same files play properly from your HDD and do not do
from your optical drive, there is only one conclusion which
leaps to mind.

If, on another hand, you're only having problems playing discs
which you have burnt yourselves, then the question of media
compatibility arises. In this case, check your optical drive
manufacturers' recommended media lists against that which you've
chosen to use, or the media manufacturers' lists vs. your
drives. While media quality can be an issue, it is unlikely to
arise in every piece of compatible media.

Do not compare a DVD playing "OK" in your standalone to the DVD
playing in your PC, as the error recovery methods differ between
them.

I am having the same problem on both of my dvd drives. It is very bad when I play a cd audio disk and I am unable to upload a cd to itunes or copy a cd. The problem has only recently come about.

Have you done the basic housekeeping recently..... used Disk Cleanup and
Defrag? Run a full antivirus scan and also an antispyware scan?
