View Full Version : cftmon.exe on a 'clean' install ??

Dr. Heywood Floyd
November 21st 06, 12:00 AM
I have just finished a 'clean' install of xp pro. I then installed SP2,
IE7 and then all the updates (68 in all).

Can anyone tell me why that ctfcom is running - from the
CurrentVersion\Run Reg key?

All references to cftmon that I can find refer to Office XP as the using
applicaation(s). Not only do I NOT have Office XP installed, I have NO
Office, of any version, installed. I have NO software, of any sort,
installed.

While I'm in the 'asking mode' - why do I need a mifrosoft frontpage
folder? It's listed under Program files and won't go away - can't
delete it. I don't have FrontPage installed.

Why do I have a msn gaming zone folder? I have NOTHING msn related
installed or used on this computer. Yet, I can't delete that folder.

Thanks

ctfmon.exe also comes with Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition,
Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 and Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2.

ctfmon.exe: This is your "Language Bar." Don't know what it is? I bet you do
not need it. Head to Control Panel -> Regional and Language Options ->
Languages TAB -> Details BUTTON -> Language Bar BUTTON (under
"Preferences") -> select the "Turn off advanced text services" check box.
This little detail will save you between 1.5 MB and 4 MB of RAM. If you are
using a "non-US" version, you may be required to install the English
localization to remove this "feature."

ctfmon.exe = CTF Loader. Part of Microsoft Office. It activates
the Alternative User Input Text Input Processor (TIP) and the Microsoft
Office XP Language Bar.

When you run a Microsoft Office XP program, the file Ctfmon.exe (Ctfmon)
runs in the background, even after you quit all Office programs.

Ctfmon.exe monitors the active windows and provides text input service
support for speech recognition, handwriting recognition, keyboard,
translation, and other alternative user input technologies.

That Seems to be installed along with IE7.

As Wesley has stated, turn off the advanced text services.

IE7 strikes again.

WTF would they include ctfmon.exe with IE? I know, stupid question.

I have had it appear now on three different computers immediately after
installing IE7.

Maybe to read web pages to the blind?

BTW, these three computers were virgin to any installs of either Microsoft
Office or Microsoft Works.

I was building them from scratch and had not yet gotten to the point where I
was installing software. I was just getting all the updates.

Thanks for that. It was showing up here on OSs on two partitions and
just started recently. Guess what? Each had a recent install of IE7.
