View Full Version : Nero will burn DVD+R but not DVD-R

I have a Compaq Presario Computer and have been happily downloading and
burning movies from the vintage newsgroup for some time now. Sent my
daughter to Staples to get some more blank media and she brought back DVD-R
by Staples, which is what was on sale. I have never given it much thought,
but I must have been using DVD+R all along.
I use Nero 5.5.10.56 and the TDK burner that came together. Never really had
a problem before. But now the Nero absolutely will not recognize the medium
DVD-r as a useable disk.
I have Googled all over and had no real joy. My temporary solution was to go
to Best Buy today and get some DVD+r blanks and back to burning away.

Any ideas, suggestions, or useful links?

The issue is probably with your burner...

Do a search for the specs for your
particular TDK model and it will list
which media is compatible.

Try going to www.nero.com then go to the download section and download 2
programs (1). Driver Cleaner tool, and (2) Info Tool. run the Driver Cleaner
Tool to see if there are any burner drivers left over from any other burner
program that has ever been installed on your machine, Nero is very finicky
and just baulks at other programs drivers, if all is ok there then run the
info tool, that will look at your whole system, all drives and drivers ASPI
files installed everything, you will see at the top of the panel an icon of a
floppy disk click on that and save the results file, go back to the Nero page
find the support section fill out the form and include the results file, send
the support form to Nero and they will analyze your system and help you with
the problem.

It's not Nero it's your drive that is not DVD-R compatible. I use two
desktop PC's at work and have the same situation with the older one
which is only DVD+R compatible. Put a blank DVD-R into it and Nero
says there is no media present because the drive is incapable of
recognising it. It catches me out once in a while usually when I'm in
rush... 8^)

It may well be your drive as GA says but before you rush out and buy a new
drive try the two free programs from Nero, the info tool will tell you if it
is the drive because the listing for DVD- will not be ticked, I had the same
problem a while ago and it was a clash with a driver left over from a
previously installed program. The programs are free from Nero so it isn't
going to cost you anything except about 10 minutes dowloading and running the
programs.

Whoooaaa - nobody suggested buying a new drive. I do however suggest
buying the correct media for the drive.

Thank you all for the helpful hints. I have been trying the info tool,
cleaned up a aspi problem I did not know I had, and generally checking
things out.
No joy so far. The information says the media is ok, and dvd-r is supported,
and so on, but when the rubber meets the road and the media is used to burn,
same old error. Just like there is nothing in the drive.
However, when I was looking through last Sunday's ad from Staples, A nice
double layer burner is on sale for $79 with a $40 rebate. It is time to move
up to the next level.
I will keep poking around and there has to be an answer (also went to TDK to
see what they had in the way of something helpful, and found out the burner
is an Indi 4x burner)

Thank you all again for holding my hand through this.
There has to be an answer, and I will persevere.
