when i try to open certain files for example an avi type i recieve an error
message not a win 32 application however some of these files were accessable
on my old pc

Its just a thought, but you may have the wrong program or no program
associated with the .avi file extension.

Try following:

1. Load Explorer.... find the file you are trying to load.
2. Right click on the .avi file and look for the "Open With" menu option.
3. Click on "Open With" and use the dialog that is loaded to select the
application you want to use for running .avi files, (probably Windows media
Player)
4. Make sure that you check the "Always use the selected program to open
this kind of file" check box and it will be remembered for future use.
