As long as I can remember, I have not been able to check the spelling in
outlook express. I just get a "An error has occured while the spelling was
being checked". Any ideas on how to fix this?

Outlook Express has never had spell-checking capabilities of its
own. Instead, it relies upon the presence of other Microsoft
applications, such as the Office Suite, Word, or the Works _Suite_
(which includes Word, not the regular Works). There are also some
3rd-party shareware/freeware solutions available at any of the many
shareware sites on the Internet Spell Magic seems well thought-of,
though I haven't tried it myself:

I don't know the reason for that particular error message, but Outlook
Express does not have a built-in spell checker. A spell checker must come
from some other source, such as Microsoft Word.

Since the message says that the error occured *while* the spelling was being
checked, there presumably is a spell checker available.
George and Diane, read here and see if any of this helps:

Yes, I know that. Just wanted to clarify for the OP that OE has no spell
checker.

OK. Clarification never hurts.
