Disk Cleaner/Compress old Files

Hi folks,
I am aware of the recommended disk cleaner
settings, "check all the boxes EXCEPT for compress old
files". I am just curious why? I was told by the HP
support people that you should check that box. I dont want
to take their advice without first checking it out as I
realize they gave me bad advice before. I do however, not
know the reasoning behind the "dont check the compress old
files" recommendation.
Can someone enlighten me please?

Many users were having the disk cleaner program hang up when it got to
compress old files. The quick fix was to NOT compress old files. I never
experienced the failure and do believe it was fixed by MS. I am compressing
old files and have all the MS updates installed.
