Downloading a DVD

I used a throw-away video camera to record a fishing trip with my grandson.
The product is in the form of a DVD, which plays fine on my computer or DVD
player. Now I want to download the DVD into my hard drive so I can edit it.
Do I need special software to accomplish this?
