Mixer device not available

Windows XP Home Edition, using SB!Live. This message started popping up.
Sometimes rebooting solves it. All devices are said to be working in
Systems/Hardware Devices. No audio device is available in the drop down list
in Control Panel Sound and Audio Devices/Audio tab.

Can someone help me solve this problem?
