OK, I've reviewed a bunch of other posts and have learned that it is a know
problem that apparrently can oly be fixed (at this time) by turning off other
features I'd rather have than the screen saver. My porposed low tech
solution...turn off the monitor when not in use.

A screen saver is not needed for modern monitors anyway. The burn in
problem that the screen saver was designed for is not an issue with modern
units.
