Hi there,

My computer all of a sudden after installing GTA Vice City and a small
racing car game has decided to restart each time I press start - shutdown. I
have uninstalled these programs since but it still restarts every time I try
to shutdown. I performed a virus scan but my PC is clean. I have to
actually power off my PC rather than shutdown to turn it off. Please
advise!!!

thanks, Tim

Take a look at this shutdown/restart troubleshooter:

Hi, these reboot instead of shut down issues are often caused by a
crash (BSOD-Blue Screen Of Death), that only occurs on shutdown. Check
the event logs, and also disable the "automatically restart" feature.
At least you'll SEE the BSOD. Which you can post.

winkey+pause, advanced.... it's in there somewhere. (current machine
running Ubuntu Linux)

However, I have an educated guess as to where the problem may lie.
DIRECTX is often included with games, and users just assume that they
have to install it. I would try downloading directx 9.0c from
microsoft, and seeing if that helps any.

Also, directx can screw with drivers, most particularly video and
sound. You may have to download and install the latest versions of
these drivers.

But don't put the cart before the horse. Find that BSOD.

Please check Event Viewer for Warning / Error Reports in the System
and Application logs for the last boot and post copies.

can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error,
information regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&sd=tech

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event Viewer.
Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the
message. This will paste the information from the Event Viewer Error
Report into the message. Make sure this is the first paste after
exiting from EventViewer.
