I am running windows xp home edition. I have turned on automatic updates
from microsoft, do I need to have service pack 2 and/or 3 updates?

You need Service Pack 2. There is no Service Pack 3 for Windows XP yet.

There is no SP3 yet; SP2 is the latest.
"Need" is a strong word, but I would definitely recommend that everybody
running Windows XP have SP2 installed. There are many security-oriented
fixes there that are very important to have.
