I am running windows xp home edition on my computer. I only have 2 small USB
ports in back, with another similar port but larger next to them. I am using
a webcam, microphone and printer in USB ports but must remove one to use
another? how do I solve this? or do I need to buy another USB port and
install it?

Ask your computer dealer for a PCI card with four USB ports.

What's software got to do with the number of USB ports?

You can buy cheap 4-port USB hubs that will plug into the one port on the
back....

To add to what Gordon said, I'd recommend a "Powered USB 2.0 hub". That's one
that you plugs into a 120 volt receptacle too. That reduces the power drawn
from your computer's power supply. The four port USB 2.0 powered hub I have
cost me $10.

You get a USB hub. One of the beauties of the USB system is that you
can break a single connection into many. A hub will have a normal USB
connection on one end that you plug into your computer and a box on
the other end with several slots (usually four) to plug USB
peripherals into. They are $20 or so at your computer store.
