View Full Version : msconfig troubles....

Stuff

(Running XP Pro with all current updates.)

All of a sudden I cannot launch msconfig.exe. It does one of two things:
1) seeming nothing
2) it launches and the dialog box comes up, only to disappear again in a
few seconds.

The system boots okay, and it looks like the programs I want to run are
running.

Please help: thanX!!!!!!

Hi Howie,

This issue has been traced to an improperly formatted BOOT.INI file. This
is a hidden file, usually in the root directory of the C: drive.

If this is not the case:

Go to Start/Run/CMD. Insert your XP CD into the drive and enter the
following command:

EXPAND -R X:\I386\MSCONFIG.EX_ Z:\WINDOWS\PCHEALTH\HELPCTR\BINARIES

This will extract a new copy of the MSCONFIG.EXE from the CD.

Run a virus scan on your computer.
It is possible that a virus is automatically closing the msconfig window
before or just after windows is able to display it. I expect this is to stop
people from preventing the virus from running when you boot your computer.
Such automatic window-closing techniques are used in some popup stoppers and
the idea may have been used by the designer of this virus.

Alternatively, some of the files used to run msconfig could be corrupt. It
would be wise to run an error-check on the hard disk. To do this, open my
computer and right click on your c: drive. Select properties > |tools| and
then 'check now'.
The error-check is the new scandisk and will want to restart your computer.
During the restart, it will run the check.
