Hi. my friend is having trouble installing his xp windows.
He runs a celeron 666 on an ABIT mb with 160mb of sdram and 20 gig hd, ata66
maxtor...
he starts the system with xp startup floppies and then xp begins to install
files from cdrom... but not for long because he gets a "cannot copy file
xxxx". he retries and sometimes it manages to copy it, but then shortly
after another file cannot be copied again, etc etc.. after a couple of
files, we can no long retry to copy the files, and have to skip, which in
turns leads to a windows xp badly installed, with missing files, and
consequently it gives plenty of errors while using it.
at first we thought it was the hard drive, so we moved it to his other p4
computer and installed from there, without any problems.. so its not the
drive.. so we thought it was cdrom, so we tried a couple of others cdroms to
install from but the same problems shows up.
can someone please help? thanks.

Clean the rom drive, sounds dirty to me. Also, if you have a legal copy of
the OS disc it is fully bootable so you will not need the 6 floppies. Make
sure the OS disc is clean as well. Make you rom the first boot device in the
bios and try to install once more, after you clean the lens of course. Or
take the rom drive out of the other PC for the install and see what happens.

XP is sensitive to incompatible hardware components. See the following
documents to determine whether or not that sytems hardware is compatible.
Use the Upgrade Advisor link on the following website.

thanks. sadly, we already tried several cdrom drives to install with. none
of them worked.

Try coping all the files from the cd to a temp directory on the hard drive
before installing. Install from the hd instead.

I am putting my money on the disc then. If you have a full legal copy, then
it is bootable, do not use the floppies. Put the disc into the rom drive,
the newest and best you can lay your hands on. If the one from the PIV is in
good shape use it, especially if it a 40X+ CDRW drive. Get a real good soft
cloth and some mild soap and clean the disk and I mean real soft and rinse
well after. Let it dry and look close to see if there is any residue left.
If yes, use a dash of Windex or similar and a real soft cloth again and
clean off the film. Go to the bios and make the CDRW the first boot device
and insert the disc there and restart the PC. It will load the drivers off
the disk needed for the install. If there is still problems (write down the
missing file names as they happen), then try to copy the whole disc to a
drive on the PIV machine and see if those files the install can't find are
available. The disc may be damaged and you can't see the trouble by eye.
