I would guess your problem could be caused by many things, and finding
exactly what could be difficult. I recently downloaded an updated
version of the Real player and had no problems. I had no problems
downloading at least 3 previous versions. I am using the Windows XP OS
with all updates.
If Real still has older versions available, you might try downloading
one of these. Real has a huge site, and tracking down this type of
information can take a lot of time. There have not been many major
changes in recent versions. There are other players, some free, that
will play Real media formats. You should try installing while online,
if you have not. Real has to have some exchange with you computer
before the install is complete. I think it usually works without being
on line and automatically connects you when needed, but there could be
a problem. If you set to block Real on a in-out firewall such as
McAfee, Real will work online but not when connected to the web. So
make certain the Real player is not blocked.

I have tried installing earlier versions which also failed to write to registry and have also tried downloading and installing while online but receive the same error message. You mentioned other players which play RealMedia formats - can you say which ones as this may be a way out as I only use Real Player for those formats and VLC player for the rest.

There is an alternative player for Real media, and it is free. See
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Real_Alternative.htm . This page
gives a fairly complete description of what the player will and will
not do. It seems to play most of the popular Real media types. I have
not used this program. However I know some who have used it, and they
seems to be pleased. Let the group know if you can install this program
and find it works or does not work well.

It works well with most of my RM files with only the odd one showing an error. Your suggestions were most helpful. Still am puzzled why I Real Media tells me I have not Administrator access - hope there is not something fundamentally wrong with my Windows XP o/s.

Since you reported: "Get error message You do not have
Administrator access to the Windows Registry." it is possiblle that a
registry cleaner tool might solve the problem. I would only use such a
tool that sets a restore point on the XP before it starts and keeps any
removed items in a file so that they can be reinstalled if something
goes wrong. You might find a free tool that meets these requirements,
but most of the better ones are not free. I am using an older version
of Registry Mechanic which so far has caused no problems. A person with
a lot of experience with the registry can go in directly running
regedit, see what is there, and often can correct the problem. But you
must know exactly what you are doing. If you make one little mistake,
you may have much worse problems than the one you attempted to fix.
Don't be alarmed if you find hundreds of problems if you use a registry
tool. Most are just links to removed programs and such that do no harm,
and the XP registry apparently will hold nearly unlimited garbage that
is no longer needed.

I will just have to soldier on or ultimatley re-install Windows XP but that is rather drastic. But thanks to everyone for their help and suggestions anyway
