View Full Version : New Window on IE 6 SP1 Doesn't Work!

Hi, how is everybody doing?

This is a puzzler that cropped up on one of my machines this morning:

When right-clicking a link on a web page on IE 6 SP1, and opting for "Open
in New Window", a new window does open, but it goes nowhere! If I click on
the "Stop" button and click on the "Reload" button, it works!

I don't know whether this is related, but: "Windows Update" does not work
anymore since this morning either! I can check for updates, select them and
accept the disclaimer but then the download/install progress window remains
empty and the network connection icon shows no traffic!

I shall be very grateful if someone could show me pointers on how to
approach this/these issue/issues. Incidentally, "Task Manager" does not show
either of the two processes as above as "Not responding".

Thanks very much in anticipation.

Everybody have a very nice afternoon.

Hello Sunita,

Doing well, thanks.

First off, do you have a popup-ad remover (sometimes also called popup =
"stoppers") on this system?
or perhaps, Norton Internet security? =20

Now, then, on your Windows Update problem.... does the "download" phase =
even start? Did you give it sufficient time? a couple of minutes?
If you have dialup service, you need to be very patient.

Assuming a download failure (or any failure really)...you must look at =
the log file & look for the "Error" notation.
Look at the bottom part of the file. Use Windows' Notepad to open this =
log: =20
C:\Windows\Windows Update.log (for Win XP & Win98/Me) ( folder =
\WINNT for Win2000)

Having found the "error" , then do a "search" on this MS page. See MS =
Windows Update Troubleshooter=20
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/

There are a few security updates you need to get, seeing that you have =
Win XP. =20
There is a real need to be up-to-date on security--- especially this =
week.
Just hold off & do not select item 821557 ---it has caused unforessen =
after-effects on some systems.

Turn off popup ad-removers (temporarily) before going to Windows Update.

Hi Maurice,

Thanks very much for the input.

Yes, I did have No-Ads installed on my machine. This was uninstalled and all
related entries removed from the registry.

The Update does not seem to work at all - I have given it lots of time! I am
on a DSL and, till yesterday morning, there was absolutely no problem!

I checked the system with a spy checker and it did find very many items
which were subsequently removed. Nothing helped though.

Regards and thanks again for the prompt response.

Have a very nice afternoon.
