Why is it that we pay 100's of dollars on microsft software? any one have
that answer? I was just wondering cause it would seem that the more products
that we buy from ms the more headaches we get. Take xp home edition. Why in
gods name do you realy need an administrator. it is for HOME use DUGH...!!!!
it makes me quite upset when xp crashes every other hr or freezes on daily
basis. ive had to zero my drive more times than i care to count now!! and
have had reinstall almost daily!! This is sush bull****!!!
i mean are supposed to call ms and pay them 35.00 to ask for an
administrator password so we can use recovery consol???? why do that after
just paying out the ass for the program?
user friendly i dont think so......
microsoft you reaaly need to think about the little guy. and get your ****
together!!!! The way you treat your customers is right up there with enron.
I shouldve stuck with apple and mac but i thought awww what they hey
somehing new wont hurt. ya right i have spent more money on this xp than i
ever wouldhave with mac.

Greetings --
It sounds like an issue of incompatible/sub-standard/defective
hardware, or device drivers, or defective/sub-standard wetware.
Clearly a case of PEBCAK.

It sounds like a bit of self-education by means of reading the
documentation would be in order here.
There should not be a need to phone Microsoft support with respect to
the default Administrator password. The documentation is quite clear
and specific in that regard.
Why don't you program an operating system that works better than XP
Home and sell it for less money?

Someone already has,
its called
Linux.
XP is totally ********, Sorry, that should be.
Microsoft is totally ********
I bought a brand new Laptop with XP Home installed,
Within two days,
it had crashed so many times that i formatted my Hard drive and installed
Linux, (FREE of of the internet)
I took the XP install disk back to where i bought the laptop and got my
money back,
it took some doing nearly 4 hours of moaning and creating a stink in the
shop.
I pointed out to the manager that if you read the disclamer that you never
normally read it states
that if you dont use / install the OS then you can return it for a full
refund.
so i did.
So far it hasn`t crashed once,
and thats been nearly 4 months.
I know this news group is not for moaning, so i`m sorry,
moan over.
Mac.
Here`s a thought,
How long would Microsoft last if all comercial aircraft
flew using XP as their operating system?
Hmmmmmmm Not long!

I have to say, that (and yes I have used linux!) I have been running XP
Pro for nearly a year now, and had NO crashes whatsoever! I've only had
to use system restore twice, once with a dodgy driver and once with a
dodgy Windows Update. The laptop it's running on is not new, I dual boot
with W2K and the machine is on for most of the day, every day.
if your "brand new" laptop crashed within two days - take it back!
(Unless the crash was caused by you!)
I find that the people who whine most about XP are (in general) those
who are constantly installing and un-installing dodgy software.

True most people spend there time instlling dodgy software which either
mucks their registry up
or completly renders their PC as a door stop.
I spend all my working hours, sitting behind a rather large corporation,
Fixing and repairing our corporate PC`s,
on a daily basis, i must add.
Failures.
1 in every 4000 is server related.
1 in every 300 failures is normally Hardware related (Users PC`s)
the rest is about 50/50 Forgotten passwords
or XP just freezing, crashing, or generall not doing anything at all.
None of the staff are allowed to install software,
none of them have the ability too, no access to the internet, Floppys or
CD.
no internall modems, Nothing! (Security)
All Software has to be approved by us first, if it`s approved we install it
on to a spare PC and then swap the PC over at night,
Or, depending if the software is for everyone, it gets added to the server.
(Security reasons)
All internall E-mails are Accessed through a totally different PC system,
which is running NT4,
These two systems are totally, totally separate.
(Security)
So i can safely say that there is no other software Dodgy or otherwise being
installed,
It`s just XP.
It realy annoys me that no one upstairs ever listens to the oily rags, who
have to deal with
all the ongoing problems on a daily basis.
Still I get paid to fix them, so at least i can thank Microsoft for paying
my wages, Indirectly. Keep on with the bad work guy`s
I know there are machines out there that have never crashed or had any
problems,
but if you look at the bigger picture, there is a common denominator,
Before we changed over to our XP system we had about 80% less failures due
to the OS.
But it`s not all bad
at least i can retire when i get to 40, if i wanted too.
For that I can thank Microsoft.
as i was saying.
I wasn`t surprised when XP crashed on my Laptop,
As i said the laptop hasn`t crashed since installing Linux,
so lets look at the Facts
Laptop + XP = Crash`s
Laptop + Linux = Stable
I think we can safely say where the problem is.
If I had to use an operating system,
I would choose either Linux, NT4 or 98 .
Mac.
Ever wondered why the internet dosent use Microsoft software!

Well since Win NT and Win 98 are on the way out forget it. Even then in a
Corp how many people just shut done with the power switch, get ****ed off
and wack their machines. Also the internet does use MS software.

I must admit I'm slightly surprised at your last statement (though not
VERY much!). I wonder why this happens? What percentage of machines do
you reckon this happens on? (There was that famous bug in NT4 which
required you to pull out the power cord from the socket with the power
still on.....)

Sounds like the Company should employ a real IT specialist - or at least
someone who knows how to set up XP correctly.
Your statement "or XP just freezing, crashing, or generall (sic) not doing
anything at all" is slightly simplistic & needs clarifying.
Do you mean to say you weren't able to find out why? Definitely overpaid and
underskilled.

I agree with the last statement! I also work in a very large network
environment (approx 2500 end users). My enviroment is a mixture of Mainly
Windows 2000 and XP boxes with some NT4 still remaining. My bigeest
headache are the NT4 boxes. The boxes that flow the best are 2000 AND XP.
I have had very little issues with XP, and the ones I have had were hardware
related and not XP. I think the problems lies with the technician in this
case.

Just a thought,
if XP is as good as you say it is,
then why are there over 40,000 messages posted in this one user group,
and roughly the same amount of postings in other XP news groups.
Hey I know most of these will relate to newbes
but just look at some of the questions over the last 3 days,
XP wont install,
Crashes,
XP wont shut down,
corrupted system file.
plus loads of newbie
you`ll never see postings to alt.HBpencil.public.basics
stating my pencil doesn't write.
If Microsoft is going to sell an operating system then it should be easy to
set up and use
so that Jo public can turn it on, sit down and play their games, edit photos
or type a letter, ect ect
they shouldn't have to ring premium rate numbers
just because a printer doesn't print , or a sound card has stopped working.
It shouldn't stop working!
and yes, if a large corporation wants to set up it`s own network`s and IT
systems
then they also should have the option, but keep the two apart.
Let the IT people set up the servers, the workstations, the networks,
and let Jo public turn on the PC without all the problems.
I would be most annoyed if I had to rebuild the engine of my car everytime I
played a CD in it,
but that's the way is.
Further to other information,
I,ve been in IT for over 20Years.
If I am no good why am I still here!
why have I not been sacked, replaced, fired, demoted to tea boy.
why is my company paying me £175K a year + benefits.
Sour grapes.
I think not,
This message started out as someone stating that they thought Microsoft
software is crap,
I don't really give a dam,
At the end of the day,
I think XP is crap, Overpriced, Oversized and a waste of time.
other people think XP is Brilliant and the best think since sliced bread.
Hobson's choice.
That's my opinion,
I`m not forcing anyone to agree or disagree,
make your own minds up.
Adios Amigo.

Probably because this is the first version of Windows that included a link
to the newsgroups in the help file.

snip snip for brevity
If you are a qualified IT you should know that most of these
failures usually lead to three things. Power surges/shortages,
hardware and Kaaza.

Most of these problems are hardware related. XP does need up-to-date
hardware in order to run correctly.Sometines, with progess, you just have
to bite the bullet and fork out some more $$'s in order to use new stuff.

Oh for crying out loud.
Of these 40,000 message, how many are just new folks asking advice on
certain things - like the difference between home or pro, whether they have
a 32 bit or 64 bit os, can they install XP on more than one computer? And
then of course all the debates over wpa.

Don't forget threads like this particular one.
It's up to 19 now, and none of them are relevant to XP Basics - including
the original post.
(Plus K.M.)
(Plus Perdita.)
(Plus multiple identical replies to one basic query.)
(Plus flames)
(Plus those gone off on a tangent)
