Westinghouse notebook with firewire port, Canon DV camcorder, Windows
MovieMaker. The only way I can get the firewire port to "see" the camcorder
is to uninstall the IEEE1394 Host Controller, connect the camcorder, turn it
ON, restart the notebook and let the plug and play installer "find" the new
device, install it and then it can "see" the camcorder. If I turn the
camcorder OFF at any time, I must go through the entire procedure again. What
is wrong and what must I do to correct? I have re-installed Windows XP Home
from the OEM distribution CD per Westinghouse Tech Support instructions. They
are stumpped as I am.
Thanks,

Jonny

Dunno the solution. I do know simply connecting or disconnecting a firewire
device to a firewire port is inconsequential if the power for the device is
off. Such a device may remain connected at all times if the power is off.
I normally power on my firewire connected DV camcorder after windows has
finished booting. And, power off the device when finished with it, before
doing anything else in XP. I do not use moviemaker, rather, videostudio 7.0

Jonny, I appreciate the response but still don't have an answer. I'm
experienced with DV, firewire and Windows XP having used the combination for
quite a while. What I don't know is what must be done to Windows XP to keep
the firewire driver "alive" once the DV device has been turned OFF. My old
Sony Vaio was "always" ready for firewire activity. I simply plugged the
cable in, turned the camcorder to VCR and the notebook recognized the
camcorder and started the software. The Westinghouse shows no sign of
recognizing the cable activity and if the software is loaded, it can not find
a connected device. In other words, the PC firewire port is OFF unless I have
just deleted the driver and let Windows reinstall it. Even then it is a one
time start.
I really hope someond can help.
