Unfortunately I don't get the chance to boot in safe mode, as the
dreaded message appears before I can choose between normal and safe
mode.

And I don't get the choice if I boot from the Windows CD.

Simply tap the F8 key at start up or restart, the selection chart should stop
at this point until you make a selection.Thiers no "chance" to it.....

Andrew E. is a troll who gives bad advice at best, destructive advice at his
worst. Ignore him.

If you are getting an I/O error before the operating system even loads, you
have hardware problems. It could be the hard drive or the motherboard (or
both, but that's unlikely).

See the hard drive diagnostic steps here:
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Hardware_Tshoot

There are motherboard diagnostics available also. Sometimes they're useful
and sometimes not. The easiest way to determine if the problem is the drive
(if the hard drive diagnostic is inconclusive) is to attach the drive to a
different controller on the motherboard. If it works, then you know the
first motherboard controller is bad. You can also put the drive in a
testbed computer and see what happens.

Testing hardware failures often involves swapping out suspected parts with
known-good parts. If you can't do the testing yourself and/or are
uncomfortable opening your computer, take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local equivalent of BigStoreUSA). Have all
your data backed up before you take the machine into a shop.
