When i have 3 file names say:

0011vkovz.drw
31c80000.drw
130drsn.drw

they are sorted in this exact order.
In Windows 9x and NT they are sorted in a more logical
order:

0011vkovz.drw
130drsn.drw
31c80000.drw

How can I tell Windows XP to use the more logical order?

Thanks in advance,

Fred

By right-clicking outside or around in the blank area where files are
listed, and selecting 'arrange icons by', you will be presented with some
options as to how files will be sorted.
In windows xp, arrange by modified is the same as arrange by date in windows
9x

Im sorry, but the sorting order is not the same as Win9x,
NT or 2000...
Pls try it :-)

Fred, this is a change in XP that was made due to requests by users.
Similar to sorting the start menu alphabetically - folks complained they
wanted to order programs manually (most used programs in easy to reach
positions). When MS changed the start menu listing (new items added to
end of list, user sorts manually to their liking), other folks
complained that the automatic sorting was gone. Sort by Name was added
in an effort to make all users happy.

If you look at the file names -- XP is ignoring the leading zeros and is
sorting the values incrementally: 11, 31, 130. Other versions of Windows
sort these same files 0-9, one digit at a time. So what is logical to
you is mishmash to someone else. It is a little distracting getting used
to the new sort order but could happen. :)

If you really hate it and want the old way back, MVP Kelly Theriot has a
REG file that can return the sort order to Win2000 style. The download
link is on line 107 of this page:

Directions for using the file are at the top of the page.
