I have something I have been trying to figureout for a while, now currently
moving all videos to a new HDD.
Even before this move and re-orginizing I have had my video folder , not
pull up all the thumbnails (even tried without thumbnailing). then when
viewing the folder or trying to close , I have to tell the folder to end
program.
Also I notice that the explorer takes up tons of CPU and memory when this
folder is crashing.
After it crashes the desktop refreshes itself and relogs explorer back on.
I hope some of this makes sense trying to explain it.
Any help would be great

Could be resource issues...maybe
you need more RAM for example.
Also you may need to do some
maintenance:

Running Disk Cleanup, Error Checking and
Defrag on a regular schedule is a good idea.

(check the two boxes..."Automatically fix file

the next time you restart your computer.
(run error checking repeatedly until it finds
no errors)

it doesnt matter if I am running 15 things or one thing.
Just happens when opening the one window, reguardless of what else is running.
Also this happens with an older drive, and now currently working on it with
a brand new drive that needs no defrag.
Also only happens with videos or Mpegs.

this sort of problem can be caused by corrupt video files, when explorer
tries to open the folder it gathers info about all the files, if a video
file is corrupt explorer goes into a tail spin.
the hard part is finding out which file is corrupt.

Reboot.
Test after a reboot.
And a windows update.
Reboot
Click | Start | Run | %temp%
Then delete all the temp files / folders
Reboot
Test with a known good VIDEO file
