Thanks for the ideas, but neither of these works in XP.

This started shortly after I downloaded the latest update
to XP. It is real inconvenient!

Have you run Scandisk,
done a defrag or rebooted,
locked and unlocked the taskbar,
grouped and ungrouped the similar programs
and anything else you can think of,
to wake it up, and then reboot it where it hurts?

Thanks for trying!
yes, checkdisk, defrag, multiple reboots, tried all the
settings on the taskbar. If I turn the language bar off
the taskbar disappears completely unless I have at least
one other thing on (quick launch for example). Nothing
quite seems to work. Can't help but suspect something in
a windows update did this?

Have also tried a couple of anti-virus programs to cross
check and a couple of anti-spyware programs for good
measure.

Just for grins & giggles:
Task bar menus and tabs don't show in WinXP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314227

Address/Status bar doesn't display in WinXP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;283280

(I don't mean to insult anyone's intelligence, but when the possible options
don't work, try for the obvious, then the impossible)

Hi Charles,

This process with correct it:

Run the edit on line 240:

Programs Aren't Minimized in the Taskbar (Line 240)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Note: Do not reboot or logoff. Once the edit is merged, right click the
Notification Area/Task Manager/Processes. Highlight Explorer.exe, End
Process.

Leave the Task Manager open. Once the process has ended, choose File/New
Task and type in: Explorer.exe.
