View Full Version : Buzzing sound when I switch users on XP

Hi,
We've had XP since it came out and in the last few months
have had a really annoying problem. When we switch user
profiles or shut down, or even giggle the mouse to make it
come out of "sleep" mode, it buzzes LOUDLY. It clearly
sounds like something is broken. I don't know how to solve
this and I can't stand it anymore. Can anyone help?
Also, someone suggested defragmenting the hard drive, but I
have no idea how to do so. Can anyone help with that?
Thanks--Wendy

Not sure but it sounds like a loose speaker connection or something along
those lines.
To DEFRAG, click on START/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Defrag Drive

Perhaps there is something physically wrong with the current mouse. Does
the same thing happen if you use a different mouse?
Another thing to try is to go into the mouse's properties in Device
Manager. On the Power Management page, you can elect "no standby" for
the mouse. May also want to check the box to allow it to wake the
computer too if it's not already checked.

For the defragmenter: Click start

Ted, am glad I gave you a good laugh. ;) I realize there is a known
problem with some program sounds when switching users and that the
obvious explanation for buzzing is likely to be interference but....
I have to wonder why they are getting this same buzzing noise when
"giggling" their mouse to get the computer out of standby. If there's no
fast user switching involved at that point - the mouse or power settings
on a USB mouse plugged into a port replicator *could* be a part of their
problem.
Just tossing out ideas for the OP so that they can hopefully pin this
down.
