Greetings,

Got a machine that has 6 USB ports (2 in front, 4 in the back). The
machine is able to "recognize" USB devices on a single port in the
front, and a single port on the back. The rest generate power, but
never recognize the device connected.

I've updated the chipset drivers. I've uninstalled and reinstalled
the USB Root Hub and USB Host Controller drivers in a variety of ways
(safe-mode, normal, have it auto detect after reboot, have it scan
right after uninstall, etc). I've disabled the "power saving" option
on the root hubs.

Unfortunately nothing I've tried has worked. I called HP Support.
They intimated that they have a "fix" for the issue, but they want to
charge money for it (and I'm not the owner). Anyone out there have
any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Since all ports use the same drivers and since two work but others don't, it
seems to me that the others don't work as the result of hardware problems.
About the only way to fix hardware problems of ports which are directly
connected to the motherboard is to replace the motherboard. Otherwise, you
could install a PCI card with multiple ports.

I agree, that would make sense. Sadly, it appears that hardware isn't
in issue in all cases (I read a lot of reports of similiar problems
when folks migrate from SP1 to SP2). I wish it is/was the
motherboard, just so I could get rid of this machine :)

You do not mention verifying the ports via Device Manager.
