I have the official version of WindowsXP Home dition and would like to get
PRO, but cannot see any updates other than from Win98 and then at a hefty
price.

No other way?

The Retail Upgrade you see that can upgrade Windows 98/2000 etc is the one
to upgrade from Windows XP Home Edition.

No other way.

However that begs the question of why you think you need Pro. Unless you
have a requirement to join a domain there's nothing you can do on Pro that
can't be done on HE.

There is no special upgrade version just for this, but the
regular XP Professional Upgrade works fine (although it doesn't
say so on the box).

But are you sure you want to do this? Are you aware that XP Home
and Professional are identical except that Professional includes
a few features (mostly related to security and networking)
missing from Home? Most home users don't need and would never use
these extra features and will see no benefits by upgrading.

I see none from XP to PRO.

All PRO editions are full price for an upgrade, the way I see it, as if I
never had the XP version and went from a win98 version. That's not fair at
all.

Fairness doesn't come into it. It's the market.

I use it to allow certain users to run certain programs. (For example, some
users are allowed to access games, while others are not)
