How can I get rid of the ugly faces in the HOTBAR?

get SpyBot.

You want to get rid of ALL of Hotbar because it is spyware.
If you don't mind having all your surfing and maybe other
data from your computer being sent to who knows who, Hotbar
is really just a form filler.

Hotbar isn't a form filler (you're thinking of Gator) it allows graphics to
be added to the address bar area of IE.
