View Full Version : Dual boot with Vista

I have installed Vista as another OS on my XP machine and now when I boot
the computer Vista is offered as the default OS which would start unless I
select XP within 30 seconds. Is it possible to change this so XP?

I have looked at System Startup under Computer Management but the default
operating system dropdown box only shows this entry:
"Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /FASTDETECT /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN

If I select to edit startup options file manually I get the following file
in Notepad:
;
;Warning: Boot.ini is used on Windows XP and earlier operating systems.
;Warning: Use BCDEDIT.exe to modify Windows Vista boot options.
;
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /FASTDETECT /NOEXECUTE=OPTIN

Is there a way to change the default OS at startup?

Would appreciate your help.

Vista uses a new boot manager. You will not be able to change the boot
sequence from XP. You will need to go into Vista and change your settings
around. Unfortuatily, I don't know how thats done.

You'll need to boot into Vista to make the change.
Go to Start -> Help and Support and enter change default
operating system in the Search box.
Click on the first item in the results list and follow the
instructions.

If you're still unable to make the change, look at this
article.

FYI, in the future you might want to post questions about
Windows Vista to the appropriate Vista newsgroup. Here are a
couple of options.

Download VistaBootPro (free) www.vistabootpro.org Install it on Vista and
then run it. One the program opens click on the Manage OS Entries. You
should have two operating systems listed XP and Vista. Select XP by clicking
on it and then click on the set as default box, followed by apply. The
dfault is set at 30 seconds anyway otherwise you will not be able to boot to
vista in time.

Right click on Computer in Vista and choose Advanced system settings,
Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery and make the changes
to System Startup there.
