View Full Version : Which XP 64-bit should I buy?

I finally got my PCIe TV Tuner card in the mail, and now I can upgrade to XP
64-bit to utilize all 4GB of memory I have in my computer. However, I've
been trying to figure out which disc set I should buy.

I went on http://www.pricewatch.com and saw the following: Microsoft Windows
XP Professional 64-bit X64 Edition. Full Edition. NOT an upgrade version but
can be used to perform an upgrade. This sounded kinda skeptical to me, so I
held off and wanted to ask the field about this. Or, if you guys could lead
me in another direction, it would be appreciated.

A full version will perform both a clean install or an upgrade. With a clean
install you just put the CD into the CD ROM and reboot your pc (see
http://xphelpandsupport.mvps.org/how_do_i_install_windows_xp.htm on my
website)

To upgrade you boot your system to the desktop (windows 98,ME) and then
install (upgrade) from there.

No.........an OEM version is different.
You did not mention OEM in your original post.......John gave you the answer
for a Full Retail version which you had inquired about.
An OEM version needs nothing on the drive it will be installed to...it will
not do upgrades...it will only fresh install.

In your original email you mentioned 'full edition' you omitted to mention
that you were thinking of an OEM copy. My reply to you covered a full retail
copy, not OEM.

OEM copies will clean install, but they will not upgrade.

I apologize for getting mixed up with the versions, but after looking at some
of the editions offered out there, some of the titles read something to the
effect of XP 64-bit OEM Full Edition, which is why I was confused. So I
thank you all kindly for responding.

Just from doing research, it sounds like I should just go Vista ultimate,
since I can upgrade using 64-bit drivers. I cannot seem to find a link out
there that doesn't have "OEM" and "Full Version" in the same sentence. I
again apologize for the confusion on my end!!

There is that "upgrade" thing again.........you cannot upgrade a 32bit
operating system to Vista Ultimate 64 bit.
It will need a fresh new install............
