I wanted to put the volume control on my taskbar and in
the control panel when I clicked to pout it on the
taskbar, I got the error:
"Windows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar
because the colume control program has not been
installed.. To install it, use add/remove programs in
control panel"
I went to controlpanel, clicked on add/remove window
components and there were many boxes checked. I
highlighted the 1st box "accessories and utilities",
clicked details and got accessories and games. I
highlighted accessories and checked details but did not
see anything about volume control.
I am using XP home upgrade from ME. Can you help?
Regards, Syl

Hi, Syl.

Upgrades from Win9x/ME are usually successful, but with some nagging
glitches here and there. Sounds like you might have found one. ;^{

What make and model sound card do you have? Or is it built into your
motherboard? WinXP handles hardware much differently from WinME, so the
WinME drivers almost certainly won't work right in WinXP. The proper
drivers for most sound products are on the WinXP CD-ROM, but maybe you have
one of the exceptions. More likely, you have the right driver, but need to
"tweak" it differently for WinXP than for WinME.

In addition to the driver, some sound cards come with software to enhance
the hardware's performance. You may need to install that extra software,
either by using Add/Remove Programs or by following instructions from the
sound card maker.

Your best bet might be to pay a visit to the website of the maker of your
sound card or of your computer. Look for a page called Tech Support, or
something similar. See if you need updated drivers or software for your
specific model sound hardware.

Hi,

Windows cannot display the volume control on the taskbar because the Volume
Control program has not been installed. To install it use Add/Remove
Programs in Control Panel.

To resolve this issue, extract a new copy of Sndvol32.exe from the Windows
XP CD to the system_root \System32 folder on your computer's hard disk. To
do this, follow these steps:

Start/Run/CMD. In the command prompt window type:

X: (where X is your CD Drive letter)
CD \I386

Then use the expand command:
expand -r sndvol32.ex_ c:\windows\system32

Note: This assumes XP is installed on C: and that its installed in the
Windows folder. If not, you'll need to adjust the command accordingly.
Additionally, this must be an installable version of XP, not a "recovery
CD".
