I just installed the update (?) and NOW MY PC IS SLOWER
than my old 286.

What's going on???

I would advise anyone wanting to install this update to
MAKE A RESTORE POINT BEFORE INSTALLING THE XP SP-1 UPDATE
in case the update becomes a retrograde on their PC.

BE CAREFUL!

Visit Windows Update and get all of the later fixes.
Once you have everything up to date - defragment your drive and possibly
look at the Microsoft tool Bootvis
see
http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hwdev/platform/performance/fastboot/default.mspx

You are very late applying SP1 - there have been a large number of updates
since then
