I just purchased two used computers, so I had to wipe all the data off of the
hard drive. They are Dell OptiPlexes 160L & 170L. I got through the Windows
XP Professional setup fine, but when I am on my desktop and want to change my
default screen resolution to something higher, it won't let me more the bar
towards a higher resolution. I do this after right clicking and going to
Properties and then Settings. Above the bar to change the resolution, it
says default Windows monitor on. I cannot figure out how to change the
resolution! The monitor, of course, does support higher resolution. Any
ideas of how to proceed? Thank you so much!

After clean installation, you need to update your Video card, either through
the Motherboard if it integrated into it or if it a Expansion card.
Have a look in the Device Manager to know the specs of your Video card and
go to the manufacturer website and download the driver.
Or open a run command and type in:
msinfo32 click [OK] and have a look on the details there one of them will
be the Display card.
By the way don't get the driver from MS updates just the Video card
Manufacturer .
