cannot defragment or scan/check disk

a problem occurred a couple of weeks ago whilst trying to burn on dvds
waisted loads of blanks, thought it was a bad batch, anway deleted a few old
avi files and decided to defrag but everytime i try now it strts ok but after
a few mins holds and then my pc restarts. the same thing happens with
scan/check disk at point 4 of 5 at 15% the pc holds then restrts. i run win
xp pro

You may have a screensaver, or other app running in the background.
