Hello
I have come across the SMTP service on XP if you install IIS. What is the
application for this? Is it for people hosting say a web server on an
intranet allowing an email service from the web server?
I am interested to know how this is likely to be used?
I am using it for some testing.

The Simple Mail Transfer Protocol allows you to receive mail. a POP or IMAP
server sends it. You need a domain name, or at least a static internet
address (IP) to use it effectively.
How to enable SMTP protocol logging for Internet Information Services in
Windows Server 2003 and in Windows 2000 :

XFOR: Telnet to Port 25 to Test SMTP Communication :

Yes I understand what SMTP is. My question was how the service would be
used on a workstation computer.

IIRC, SMTP allows you to send mail, POP allows you to receive it.
